One of the things that we are really trying to work on this year in the Later Literacy Project is goal setting, using your students' asssessment data (RAD and SWW) and your own classroom observations and assessment tools to guide instruction and then once you have set goals figure out what resources you need to make this happen. This is an area that the mentors and myself are always happy to help facilitate. I am including an example here and you can download goal setting sheets at the end of the page.

Writing
Areas of strengths determined from the students’ assessments
1. Students have ideas when given a topic to write about
2. Students are verbal orally-
3. students have a good variety of background knowlege
Areas of need determined from the students’ assessments
1. topic sentence/main idea
2. structure-bringing it to a conclusion (no real ending
3. expand on ideas more-more detail
Our goal for this term is for students to show improved organization in their writing and be more able to identify in their reading main idea and details in reading non-fiction paragraphs.
To reach this goal our students will demonstrate the ability to write paragraphs with a definite beginning, middle and end. They will be able to identify main idea and supporting details in non fiction reading. When given a general prompt they will show a topic sentence and back this up with interesting and relevant details in a logical sequence and have both an interesting beginning and a logical end.
