Purpose of today’s workshop is to introduce you to Twitter

Step 1-

Go to

http://twitter.com/

To do this really only need an e-mail address and a short bio-I have one e-mail address that I use for all my ‘junk mail’.  Some people use their real names-I chose to use merekatlit (I guess I decided I would sooner be a bit more anonymous) up to you… It will ask you your interests to help you find what you might want to follow.  If you have a website you can list it.  So for instance if I see something from someone that interests me then I can check on them and go to their website.  You can post your picture-I have a picture of my cat-what can I say???

Here is a short little graphic about twitter that you may find helpful.

This gives you a short guide about the whys and hows.

What I like about twitter.  It’s short-doesn’t take a lot of reading.  I often find good links-online articles etc.   If I find something that’s good I try to share it as well.

You can create lists –for instance I created one called Reading BC-and then I get to put people on that list so that you can read twitters from people who are more specifically involved with literacy.  I am on one for vsb employees and one for bc educators.  I am not on it but sometimes go to #edchat for instance as it often has interesting article links on education.

If you want to search a subject best just  put in #literacy for example-it will show you who is posting who is near you even.

If you have people you want to follow but don’t want to check tweets all the time, you can just hit their name in the section of who you follow and see if they have been saying or citing anything interesting lately.

If you find something interesting or want to share something I got a nice application called add this that just lets me hit a key at the top of screen and share it on facebook or twitter

If you are concerned about third party access of your twitter or facebook accounts you might want to read this

This is a helpful blog by a VSB teacher that can give you more information about social networking and the value of twittering ( I don’t know Fred- just through twitter) but very helpful-this is his new blog

For specific information on twittering this is on his old blog

Another great site re social networking is Aaron Mueller's, another VSB teacher who is teacher librarian for distant ed high school program.  http://vlnbuzz.wordpress.com/
